Skill Levels
These are not strict rules. They are guidelines. Some players fit between two levels, and different formats can feel very different.
Learning the Basics
You're still building confidence with serving, passing, positioning, rules, and controlled three-contact volleyball. The goal is improvement while having fun.
Social Play
You understand the rules and can consistently keep rallies going. Competition matters, but the atmosphere is still primarily social and welcoming.
B Level
Players demonstrate dependable serving, passing, setting, attacking, defensive positioning, and a growing understanding of beach volleyball strategy.
BB Level
Experienced players with strong ball control, consistent attacking and defense, reliable setting, good court awareness, and developed team strategy.
A Level
Advanced players execute every major skill consistently, move efficiently, communicate well, and compete comfortably at a fast pace against other experienced players.
Note: Houston Sand Volleyball currently does not offer a dedicated AA division. Players at that level are encouraged to review individual league descriptions, particularly our upper divisions, to determine the best fit.
League Formats
The biggest difference between formats is how much court each player covers. Fewer players generally means more touches, more movement, and more responsibility.
Our most beginner-friendly league format. Four players share the court, making it easier to learn positioning while still enjoying organized competition.
Best For
New, Recreational, and Intermediate players.
A faster-paced format with more touches and more responsibility than 4's without the full demands of doubles.
Best For
Recreational and Intermediate players.
Every touch matters. Two players cover the entire court, making this one of the most demanding and rewarding formats.
Best For
Intermediate, Upper Intermediate, and Competitive players.
Our highest-level organized leagues featuring experienced players, quicker rallies, stronger attacks, and advanced strategy.
Best For
Upper Intermediate (BB) and Competitive (A) players.
